Why Cheap Website Support Could Cost You Everything (A Warning for Business Owners)

Posted on 4 Jan at 11:27 pm
Website security risks

We all love a bargain. When you receive an email from someone overseas promising to “fix your SEO” or providing cheap website maintenance services” for $100 a month, it’s tempting to say yes.

But in my 10+ years of running Tharlizwa Media here in Brisbane, I have seen this story end in disaster too many times.

I want to share the truth about what often happens when you hand your website keys to unverified, “cheap” service providers.

The “Lucky” Trap

Many business owners think they are lucky to find a service provider from countries like India or Pakistan who charges pennies on the dollar.

Here is the reality: There are incredibly talented, respectful developers in those countries. But those professionals are not cheap, and they do not send spam emails to your inbox.

The people spamming you the moment your new website goes live are usually not experts. They are often scammers or inexperienced amateurs looking for a quick buck. And trusting them can be dangerous.

Real Horror Stories (From My Own Clients)

I have had clients come back to me in panic after hiring these “experts.” Here are two real examples of incompetence that put businesses at risk:

1. The “GoDaddy” Confusion One client authorized a cheap overseas provider—rather than a qualified Brisbane SEO expert—to manage their site. This expert contacted me, angry, demanding I hand over the “Web Hosting Account.” I explained that I had already given them the cPanel details—which is the Master Key to the files and database. He argued with me, insisting that “Web Hosting” meant a “GoDaddy Account” login. He didn’t understand that cPanel is the industry standard for managing a site. He literally didn’t know how to use the tools he was hired to manage.

2. The “Fake Email” Accusation Another “expert” contacted me, blaming me for creating a “fake” email address on a client’s website. He saw contact@businessname.com.au and told the client it didn’t exist because it wasn’t a Hotmail or Gmail address. He didn’t understand that professional businesses use professional custom email domains!

The Ultimate Cost: Losing Your Website

It sounds funny, but it has serious consequences.

One of my past clients insisted on moving his site to one of these “experts.” A year later, he contacted me, desperate. He had lost his entire website.

His “most trusted expert” tried to migrate the site to a new server but didn’t know how to use cPanel to properly back up and restore the files. They deleted everything. Years of work, gone in an instant.

Some clients have even been blackmailed—locked out of their own websites until they paid a ransom.

How to Spot the Scammers

These scammers are clever in one way: Fear. They use free SEO tools to generate scary-looking reports with red “ERROR” warnings and send false screenshots claiming your site is broken.

Don’t panic.

The Lesson: You Get What You Pay For

Your website is your digital house. You wouldn’t give the keys to your front door to a stranger who walked up the driveway wearing a mask. Don’t give your website passwords to a stranger who emailed you from a spam folder.

Our Advice:

  • Ignore the Spam: Legitimate agencies don’t spam you the second you launch.
  • Ask for Credentials: Do they know what cPanel is? Are they local?
  • Keep Control: Never give your domain registrar login (like GoDaddy) to anyone unless you trust them explicitly.
